Obstetrician

An obstetrician is a physician that specializes in caring for pregnant women through childbirth. Many obstetricians also train as gynecologists so they are able to give medical advice and treatment concerning a woman's reproductive system. Most students in residency study both gynecology and obstetrics and then decide on their career path. Often medical students find themselves drawn to this career due to the amazing occurrence of life through the birth of a baby. Obstetrician/gynecologist is a physician specialist who provides medical and surgical care to women and has particular expertise in pregnancy, childbirth, and disorders of the reproductive system. This includes preventative care, prenatal care, detection of sexually transmitted diseases, Pap test screening, and family planning. An obstetrician is a medical doctor who specializes in the management of pregnancy, labor, and birth. They also receive specialized education in the health of the female reproductive system and surgical care. Much of their education focuses on the detection and management of obstetrical and gynecological problems. An obstetrician/gynecologist, commonly abbreviated as OB/GYN, can serve as a primary physician and often serve as consultants to other physicians. OB/GYNs can have private practices, work in hospital or clinic settings, and maintain teaching positions at university hospitals. OB/GYNs may also work public health and preventive medicine administrations. OB/GYNs have a broad base of knowledge and can vary their professional focus. Many develop unique practices, providing high-quality health care for women. OB/GYNs may choose to specialize in the following areas: An obstetrician closely monitors their patient's health during pregnancy and delivery. They diagnose fetus abnormalities or health issues of their patients and offer healthy living advice and treatment. They see their patients on a regular basis for health consultations, ultrasounds, and any of their patient's prenatal medical needs including forming a birth plan. The frequency of a patients check up often depends on risk factors and resources.

Effects of Steroids

The kind of binding the steroids have to hormones determines the immediate effects of steroids in the brain. Androgen (male sex hormone) and estrogen (female sex hormone) receptors on the surface of a cell attract steroids. The steroid–receptor complex affects the cell nucleus and can influence patterns of gene expression. Because of this, the acute effects of steroids in the brain are substantially different from those of other drugs. Steroids are not euphorigenic, and do not trigger rapid increases in the neurotransmitter dopamine, which is responsible for the high that often drives substance abuse behaviors. However, long term steroid use eventually influences the same brain pathways and affects chemicals such as dopamine, serotonin and opioid systems. Considering the combined effect of their complex direct and indirect actions, it is not surprising that Steroids can affect mood and behavior in significant ways.

Family Physicians

Family physicians deliver a range of acute, chronic and preventive medical care services. In addition to diagnosing and treating illness, they also provide preventive care, including routine checkups, health-risk assessments, immunization and screening tests, and personalized counseling on maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Family physicians also manage chronic illness, often coordinating care provided by other sub-specialists. Family medicine and family physicians play a very important role in the healthcare system of a country. In the USA, for example, nearly one in four of all office visits are to family physicians. A general practitioner is a medical practitioner who treats acute and chronic illnesses and provides preventive care and health education for all ages and both sexes. They have particular skills in treating people with multiple health issues and comorbidities. Family medical practitioners must then complete three to four years of additional residency in family medicine. Three hundred hours of medical education within the prior six years are also required to be eligible to sit for the board certification exam; these hours are during residency training. Family physicians will see anyone with any problem and are experts in common problems. Many family physicians deliver babies in addition to taking care of patients of all ages. In order to become board certified, family physicians must complete a residency in family medicine, possess a full and unrestricted medical license, and take a written cognitive examination. The American Board of Family Medicine, as well as other specialty boards, is requiring additional participation in continuous learning and self-assessment to enhance clinical knowledge, expertise and skills. Family physicians may pursue fellowships in diverse topics including adolescent medicine, geriatric medicine, sports medicine, sleep medicine, and hospice and palliative medicine.

Oral Antibiotics

Oral antibiotics used to treat acne include erythromycin or one of the tetracycline antibiotics (tetracycline, the better absorbed oxytetracycline, or one of the once-daily doses of doxycycline, minocycline or lymecycline). Sometimes doctors prescribe Trimethoprim (off-label use in UK). However, reducing the P. acne bacteria will not do anything to reduce the oil secretion and abnormal cell behavior that is the initial cause of blocked follicles. Additionally antibiotics are becoming less and less useful, as resistant P. acne strains are becoming more common. Acne will generally reappear quite soon after the end of treatment--days later in the case of topical applications, and weeks later in the case of oral antibiotics. Furthermore, side effects of tetracycline antibiotics can include yellowing of the teeth and an imbalance of gut flora, so doctors recommended these treatments after the determining that topical products have no effectiveness. Studies show that sub-antimicrobial doses of antibiotics such as minocycline also improve acne. Doctors believe that the anti-inflammatory property of minocycline also prevents acne. These low doses do not kill bacteria and hence cannot induce resistance.
